The extensive use of air power during the Vietnam war exposed the pilots to the hazzard of anti-aircraft fire. The NVA was equipped with SAM missiles that were capable of bringing down American aircraft.
Pilots were outfitted with a variety of survival equipment. In the event they were shut down, this equipment would helped then evade the enemy and contact friendlies to arrange for rescue.
The item featured here is the RT-159 emergency radio. It was issued to pilots as part of their survival gear.
The radio was developed in 1952 (Korean War). As with many other items, it was re-issued during the Vietnam war. It was primarily employed by the US Air Force and US navy. It came in a variety of colors.
The radio had two crystals. It covered a frequency of 121.5 and 243 MHZ. It modulated in AM
