Issued December 2016 Philtrust Bank began operations on October 21, 1916 in Binondo, Manila's central business district. Founded by a group of American Investors, the Bank's initial line of business was to act as trustee for families of the U.S. Military. Control subsequently passed to the Archdiocese of Manila. In 1919, the company went into full-fledged commercial and savings banking.
The
Bank grew rapidly during the American Regime and the Commonwealth Period, but
like the rest of the country, Philtrust Bank experienced the hardships of World
War II that began on December 8, 1941. In the post-war decades of economic rehabilitation and development, Philtrust Bank was consistently rated as one of the most outstanding Philippine banks. It has been a byword for banking conservatism and reliability. The Bank's guiding principle has always been never to take undue risk with depositor funds. In 1978, Don Emilio T. Yap and a group of close associates acquired the majority interest. The Bank has since grown from strength to strength. Granted a universal banking license in 2007, Philtrust Bank had resources of P141.503 billion as of end-March 2016.
