Publication: Atlas Portatif, ou le nouveau Theatre de la Guerre en Europe; Contenants les cartes geographiques, avec les plans des Villes & Forteresses les plus exposees aux revolutions presentes. Amsterdam, 1706

The engraving depicts the bombardment of Calais in February 1696, destroying a french embarcation fleet and thus foiling an invasion of England, planned for March 1696, by King James II.

This engraving is one of a series of engravings of fortified towns and ports which were subjected to attack during the Nine Years' War. The Nine Years' War (1688–97) alternatively called the War of the Grand Alliance was a major war of the late 17th century fought primarily on mainland Europe but also encompassing theatres in Ireland and North America. The Nine Years' War was the first of the truly global wars. The Alliance, primarily against France, was led principally by the Anglo-Dutch Stadtholder-King William III, the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, King Charles II of Spain, and Victor Amadeus, Duke of Savoy.
