The engraving depicts the ground plan of the Umayyad Mosque also known as the Great Mosque, in Damascus.

This engraving was taken from a German version of 'A Description of the East and some other Countries' by Richard Pococke. Pococke set out from England in 1737 and over the next several years he toured upper and lower Egypt, ascended Vesuvius twice, explored the Alps in the region of Chamonix, visited the Holy Land, traveled around Crete (where he climbed Mt. Ida and rescued a German enslaved by the Turks) and finally returned home in 1740.
