Comments

Set of 5 pieces of 50 cents

About the size of a large cat, this member of the squirrel family is one of our most endangered animals. It is also one of the rarest mammals on earth.

The 2019 Canadian Wildlife Treasures package is made possible through the MRC's collaboration with the Toronto Zoo. From breeding programs to educational activities, Canada's largest zoo is fighting the loss of animal species while encouraging Canadians to protect their natural environment - for today and tomorrow.

-Canada has approximately 286 endemic species.

-Many of Canada's endemic species are often overlooked because of their size. This is the case for various insects, such as flies, bees, ants, beetles and grasshoppers, as well as spiders, slugs and snails.

-Some of these invertebrates (i.e., animals without backbones) may not have the charisma of large mammals like bears, but they nevertheless provide ecosystem services essential to life on Earth. Others, such as butterflies, have no trouble attracting our attention despite their small size.
