Rosalind Franklin's expertise on x-ray diffraction enabled her to discover the double-helix structure of DNA - changing the field of cellular biology forever. She was an inspirational young scientist whose revolutionary work was never fully appreciated until after her tragic death aged just 37.

To commemorate what would have been her 100th birthday, The Royal Mint have released this exciting Silver Proof Piedfort 50p Coin in her honour. Following the must-have Stephen Hawking design, this is the second coin in the 'Innovation In Science' Series.

David Knapton's design features 'Photograph 51', the image from which she made her discovery. He describes the idea of linking her name to form DNA as being a 'penny drop' moment, much like the one Rosalind Franklin must have felt all those years ago.
