The idea for the Kennedy Half Dollars occurred within a few hours after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. The coins were released for circulation by January 1964. However, not many coins ended up in circulation due to people hoarding them. These coins were also made of 90% silver. Even after the Coinage Act of 1965, Kennedy Half Dollars, now with 40% silver content in them, were not seen in circulation. The coin had become famous inside and outside America with people all over the world wanting to hold on to it.
