Circa 1820 Royal Crown Derby Chelsea The Sailor And His Lass Porcelain Figurines.

This set is known as the sailor and his lass. Many young British men left for months or years at a time on the great ships that Britain was sending to trade around the world, and the lads would have to trust that the young ladies remaining at home would be faithful to them during their voyage on foreign seas. These figures are also said to picture Henry Woodward and Nancy Dawson, as connected somehow with a popular ballad. In this early 19th century era of the history of porcelain production in Derby, brighter and more intense colors were used than earlier, and this pair have the appropriate mark for this early 19th century time. They stand almost nine inches high and are in a very good condition. His right hand is missing a finger, please see photos. The decoration is perfect and as bright as the day it was made. They are marked N316, the correct Derby inventory number for this set.
