Gene Autry (Sep. 29, 1907-Oct. 2, 1998) nicknamed the Singing Cowboy, was an American singer/songwriter, musician, actor & rodeo performer who gained fame by singing in a crooning style on radio, in films & on TV for over 3 decades beginning in the early ‘30s. Autry was the owner of a TV station, several radio stations & the Los Angeles/California Angels Major League Baseball team from ‘61-‘97. From ‘34-‘53, he appeared in 93 films & between ‘50-’56 hosted The Gene Autry Show TV series. During the ‘30s & ‘40s, he personified the straight-shooting hero - honest, brave & true - & profoundly touched the lives of millions of Americans. He was 1 of the most important pioneering figures in the history of country music & considered the 2nd major influential artist of the genre's development (after Jimmie Rodgers). His singing cowboy films were the 1st vehicle to carry country music to a national audience. In addition to his signature song Back in the Saddle Again, & his hit At Mail Call Today, Autry is still remembered for his Christmas holiday songs Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,  Frosty the Snowman, Here Comes Santa Claus, & Up on the House Top. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame & is the only person to be awarded stars in all 5 categories on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (for film, TV, music, radio, & live performance). The town of Gene Autry, Oklahoma, was named in his honor, as was the Gene Autry precinct in Mesa, Arizona. He retired from show business in ‘64, having made almost 100 films & over 600 records. Gene Autry passed away of lymphoma in‘98, 3 days after his 91st birthday.
