This huge, ceremonial yak tooth tribal necklace from Nagaland (northeast India) was handcrafted for tribal events. Yak teeth are the hallmarks of old Naga jewelry with this necklace an excellent example.

The necklace has over 400 yak teeth with a cowry shell. The necklace fasteners have yellow and red carved yak or glass adornments. It is heavy!

I've traveled to India and Nepal over a dozen times. I purchased this about 25 years ago from a trader. We sat cross-legged in the market and haggled while taking yellow snuff. I have never sneezed so much in my life! I have searched the web, eBay, etsy and have not seen anything that comes close to the size or complexity of this yak tooth necklace.

Nagaland is a remote mountainous region located in the farthest reaches of north-eastern India bordering Myanmar (old Burma). It is one of the few areas in the world where indigenous tribal groups and customs remain intact. Historically, the Naga were described as warriors and prolific headhunters, although these practices have long since ended. Alas, the ancient Naga tribes have since become extinct.
