This listing is for a 1968 Olds Recording professional trumpet and case (see photos). For being 55 years old, this amazing trumpet (and its case) are in excellent condition except for some surface scratches and minor external pitting, both of which are typical and purely-aesthetic issues for trumpets this age (please zoom in on the high-res pics for aesthetic detailed views). Also, the 2nd valve tuning slide pull is discolored, so I typically just reverse it as shown in the photos.

This classic trumpet is raw brass and nickel silver. Without a thick layer of deadening lacquer, this trumpet sounds phenomenal! The highly-desirable one-piece bell is an Olds propriety alloy called Rey-O-Loy, a high-copper red-brass alloy. (Note: The Olds “Super Recording” trumpets do not have a Rey-O-Loy bell.) The valve block is raw yellow brass (slightly darker in color due to patina, which provides an ultra-thin protective barrier). The leadpipe and outer tubes of the tuning slides are made of nickel silver. The monel valves function perfectly and are in excellent condition (see photos of disassembled trumpet).

Those familiar with the classic Olds Recording professional trumpet already know that it is one of the greatest professional trumpets of the 20th century. F.E. Olds & Son was one of the best brands, and many Olds trumpet enthusiasts prefer the beautiful tone of the professional Recording model over the others (even preferring the Standard Recording over the Super Recording model). Regardless of personal preferences, this Olds Recording professional trumpet has some exceptional features:

- One piece hand-hammered Rey-O-Loy red brass bell

- Offset 2nd valve for improved ergonomics and comfort

- 3rd valve tuning slide trigger, which functions perfectly

- Balanced valve block location (closer to trumpet center)

- Nickel silver used for leadpipe, upper-valve block, outer slides, etc.

- Raw brass without lacquer allows for improved resonance

Note: A raw brass finish will not shorten the life of an instrument as long as the instrument is kept clean and is stored in its case in a good environment (not in a damp basement or shed for example). The raw brass surfaces will develop a protective patina coating. This is true of both the inner and outer raw brass surfaces.

Although the raw brass will naturally darken in color with good patina to protect the brass from bad corrosion (like red rot), simply wiping off the trumpet when finished will help keep it looking good. Remember that the inside surfaces of all brass instruments are raw brass, so all brass instruments should be kept clean (inside and out) and stored in their cases in good environments. Additionally, proper care and maintenance includes applying valve oil and slide grease on a regular basis. I recommend using valve oil every time it is played to insure continued longevity and optimal performance.

I am Joe Bolton (trombone.gallery). I personally tested, cleaned and lubricated this instrument. I hereby certify that it is fully functional and is all ready to play. Since trumpet mouthpieces are available in such a broad range of various sizes and shapes, a mouthpiece is not included with this listing. A mouthpiece of the make and model that is preferred by the trumpeter is to be purchased separately.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
