Very Nice Union Army Civil War Navy Blue Jean Cloth fabric Forage Cap - Unique variation of the Army issue cap.  With leather bill and chin strap -- (see photos).  Jean cloth was used by contractors both in caps and some uniform parts such as greatcoats when the wool specified for Union Army contracts was in short supply. According to documents from the Schuylkill Arsenal (Pennsylvania), at the start of the war this shortage was especially quite severe. This plagued uniform manufacture, garments which saw issue through the end of 1862 as supplies were exhausted with the cloth supply stabilized. However, Jean cloth was still being utilized in commercial products for sale to troops throughout the war.
