History
The Macchi C.205 Veltro (Italian for “Greyhound”) was an Italian World War II fighter aircraft built by Aeronautica Macchi. It was part of the “Serie 5” Italian fighters, which included the Reggiane Re.2005 and Fiat G.55.

Notable Pilot:
Adriano Visconti, Italy’s highest-scoring ace, achieved 11 of his 26 credited victories while flying the Veltro. Major Adriano Visconti, a prominent figure in the Regia Aeronautica and later the National Republican Air Force, piloted the C. 205 "Veltro" in 1944 to safeguard the skies over central and northern Italy. He attained multiple aerial victories during this period. Notably, with the "Veltro," he successfully shot down two P38 "Lightning" and two P47 "Thunderbolt" aircraft engines, securing these victories between January 3, 1944, and April 30, 1944.

Design and Development:
The Macchi C.205 Veltro was developed as an improvement over the earlier C.202 Folgore. It was equipped with the powerful Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine, which significantly enhanced its performance. Armed with two 12.7mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns and two 20mm MG 151 cannons, the Veltro had formidable offensive capabilities.

Performance:
Top Speed: Approximately 640 km/h (400 mph). The Veltro could match the best Allied opponents in speed and maneuverability. Despite its effectiveness, it was introduced late in the war due to limitations in the Italian war economy.
