J. M. W. TURNER, R.A. (1775-1851), the son of a barber, is one of the greatest of English landscape painters. He entered the R.A. Schools at the age of 14 and was elected R.A. in 1802. In 1819 he made the first of several visits to Italy he particularly loved to paint in Venice. His later works, in which the brilliant, hazy light seems almost to dissolve the shapes, had a considerable influence on 20th century painting.
