Sonoran Turquoise is mined in Sonora, Mexico near the city of Cananea. The mine is located at the Campitos Mountain just outside of the city, only about a 35-mile drive from the Arizona border. The local news economy relies heavily on the large copper mines in the area and turquoise has long been a by-product of these mines. There are a couple of different types that come from this area, but Campitos Turquoise is the most prominent. It has been produced on and off for a very long time. In fact, it was mined hundreds of years ago and brought north through trade routes with the Native Americans. White Water Turquoise is another beautiful stone that comes from this location.

Turquoise is a sedimentary formation that is formed when moisture (rain or snow) filters down through mineral rich soil on the upper crust of the earth. This soil must contain the precise amounts of copper, aluminize sulfites and iron to create the combined liquid that siphon's down into voids below the surface of the earth.
