RARE Scottish pre stamp cover from ‘GALLASHIELS’ to Melrose 1832 - Manuscript 4

Manuscript 4 to front (indicating the 4d rate for mileage not exceeding 15 miles) and ‘GALLASHIELS’ single line handstamp to rear. The double L in Gallashiels is an archaic spelling for the town - ’The sowr plumbs of Gallashiels’ is the town tune)

The folded wrapper was posted from the National Bank Office, Galashiels to Thomas Scott Esq., Abbotsmead, Melrose. (Concerning an unpaid bill of £11 15s 8d) dated 5th October 1832.

The 1841 Census (extract copy included) shows Thomas Scott, Writer (i.e. lawyer) aged 58 living at Abotsmead with his wife Rabina,
2 servants and boy labourer.
