The tabla is a popular Indian percussion instrument used in the classical, popular and religious music of the Indian subcontinent and in classical Hindustan music. The term tabla is derived from a Sanskrit word that means "drum".
Tabla is a pair of drums. It consists of a small right drum called a dayan and a larger metal drum called a bayan. The dayan (right drum) is made of wood. The diameter on the diaphragm can range from just under five inches to over six inches. The bayan (left drum) made of copper or brass with a nickel or chrome plate is the most commonly used material. Low quality bayan may be available in aluminum, iron, or steel. Both come with goatskin drum heads and camel leather straps to adjust the pitch. The large black spot on tabla surfaces is a mixture of rubber, soot and iron filings. Their job is to create the bell-like timbre characteristic of the instrument. Tabla is created with seductive visual harmony that tempts drummers to experience the rhythms of tradition.
