The principles of Bushido guided a samurai's conduct, emphasizing values such as honour, loyalty, courage, justice, compassion, honesty, and self-control. A breach of these principles could lead to disgrace. The fear of disgrace, or "kizuna" in Japanese, was a significant aspect of a samurai's mindset and conduct within the Bushido code. For a samurai, the prospect of dishonour or disgrace was often more feared than physical harm or death itself. Overall, the fear of disgrace served as a powerful motivator for samurai to adhere to the strict code of ethics and conduct that defined their way of life. It was a deeply ingrained aspect of their mentality and contributed to the discipline, loyalty, and ethical behavior associated with the samurai class in Japanese history. Hand printed in England.
