Antique Wooton Style Aesthetic Movement Walnut Cabinet Secretary Desk, circa 1884

This desk was produced around 1884-1886 and is made from black walnut with maple veneer on the interior drawers. The hardware is bronze and there are 58 different cubbies and drawers inside the desk. The doors swing open and lie flush against the sides of the central piece and can be closed again and locked.  The entire left door is designed for paper storage. Beneath the work surface there are three supply drawers. Above, there are small flat file drawers.  All of the drawers have hand-cut dovetail joints (These were still done by hand until the very early 1900s.)

It has a pull out work surface, with separate supports, and there are cubbies designed for normal writing paper and some designed for portfolio/drawing sized pieces. There is a single cubby with a door on the right side, as well as more cubbies. It sits on casters, disguised as paw feet, and has a simple leaf motif border carved on the outer doors.

This desk measures 62 1/2" high, 45" wide, 22" deep. It weighs approximately 200 lbs. While this piece is in good shape, it does show some signs of both current wear and past repair, from age and use. The cubby door has had its closing mechanism updated to a more modern style and had a large crack repaired. Two out of the four casters (both rear) have been replaced. The lock is original but the key has been replaced. Please consult images, and call or message with any questions.
