PHYSOCHLAINA ORIENTALIS

A very interesting and original perennial native to north Caucasus and northeaster Turkey. The plant forms semi-tuberous, rhizomatous roots, with multiple shoots emerging from a central base, and its colonies slowly expand over time. Grey green, softly haired, wavy-edged, significantly veined leaves are arrow-shaped and to 12 cm long. Dark coloured bloom stalks appear in late April, crowded with clusters of large, protruding, smoky-purple tubular flowers to 3 cm long. The fruits are also ornamental. In summer the plant goes into dormant stage and completely disappear until the next spring when it returns with a few more bloom stems than its previous year. A clump of mysterious Physochlaina orientalis in full bloom will be a highlight of your spring garden, and just the thing to baffle and impress your friends and neighbours. Easy from seeds.
