GENTIANA PANNONICA, HUNGARIAN GENTIAN

An exceptionally impressive and decorative perennial, practically not found in cultivation. The eye-catching, tropical appearance of the plant makes it worthy of a place in the center of the garden. Strong, leathery, Alstroemeria-like leaves to 15 cm long form a basal clump from which stiff flower shoots grow up to 60 cm high in summer. Large, trumpet-shaped flowers up to 5 cm long grow in the leaf axils in the top parts of the shoots. The blossoms are purple-red with dark spots and yellowish, also spotted inside. Excellent in front of the border, rocky- garden, large containers and as a cut flower. Flowers in first or second year from sowing. The Hungarian gentian is very similar to the purple gentian (Gentiana purpurea) from which it differs in its bell- shaped calyx and strong, longitudinal leaf-veins. It is considered much easier to grow in the garden than G. purpurea. Quite easy from seeds.
