The FD55mm f/1.2 was introduced in May 1971, replacing the FL55mm f/1.2 (introduced in July 1968) and becoming the flagship of Canon's large-aperture lenses for SLRs.
Large-aperture standard lenses have become the most popular all-purpose lenses for general photography, including landscapes, sports, portraits and close-ups. However, as with the FL50mm F1.4II (released in May 1968), Canon has made significant progress in performance at maximum aperture as a result of many years of research and development.
By using seven elements in five groups, four of which are new types of glass, the lens eliminates high-order spherical aberration and image plane curvature.

■ Optical system: 
This lens still shines like new with little use.
Visually, it is very clear.
No scratches, fungus, haze, or balsam separation on internal elements.
There is only a small amount of tiny dust inside the lens, even when looking through it under strong light.

■ Cosmetically: 
The lens shows only minor signs of use, with no major scratches, dents, chips, or brass. 
The filter thread shows no signs of wear. 
The rubber grips are neat and have almost no wear or fading. 
The mounting flange is clean, with little wear or dirt. 

■ Functionally: 
The lens works perfectly, the focus is very firm and buttery smooth with proper resistance designed for prime-top sharpness. 
Aperture ring stops positively and clearly at all F stops, aperture blades are clean and oil-free, mark-free.
