BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURES:
  • Special Features

    5 Stars out of 5

    oz4.jpeg

If you plan to upgrade from the 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition,' be forewarned. Not all of the extras from that substantive release have been ported over to this more streamlined 3D edition. The supplements included here are not skimpy by any estimation; the selection just isn't complete. (Of course, for 'Oz' fanatics like myself, there's a 3D 75th Anniversary Collector's Edition that does contain all the previous supplements in addition to some unique collectibles at a premium price. Unfortunately, High-Def Digest did not receive a copy of that sumptuous box set for review.) So if you care about extras, read the following carefully to see just what is included and what isn't before you chuck a previous release. The commentary and trailers appear on both the 3D and 2D discs; all other special features reside exclusively on the 2D disc.

    • Audio Commentary – The late director Sydney Pollack emcees this captivating commentary featuring archival reminiscences, analysis, and countless production facts and anecdotes from a host of notable 'Oz' cast members and experts, including Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, the children of Bert Lahr, Margaret Hamilton, producer Mervyn LeRoy, munchkin Jerry Maren (one of the Lollipop Guild boys), and John Fricke, arguably the world's foremost authority on both 'The Wizard of Oz' and Judy Garland. Even Buddy Ebsen (the original Tin Man, who was forced to leave the production after suffering a life-threatening allergic reaction to the aluminum dust used in the character's makeup) shares his memories of his brief 'Oz' tenure and MGM's insensitive attitude toward his illness. Fricke anchors the discussion and relates a wealth of information in an affable, accessible manner. From broad themes to obscure minutia, he covers as much as he can in the allotted time (I personally know the man, and what he shares is just a miniscule portion of his vast 'Oz' knowledge) – casting, script changes, set design and special effects, to name but a few – and his substantive remarks augment the personal recollections well. Whether you're an 'Oz' junkie or just discovering the film for the first time, you owe it to yourself to give this informative, entertaining track a listen.

    • Documentary: "The Making of the Wonderful 'Wizard of Oz'" (HD, 69 minutes) – This all-new documentary, narrated by actor Martin Sheen, replaces a similarly titled piece hosted by Angela Lansbury that graced 'Oz' home video releases for years. This new examination covers much the same territory, but includes a host of fresh interviews with composer Stephen Schwartz, 'Oz' and Garland expert John Fricke, film historian Leonard Maltin, two surviving Munchkins, and even the great-grandson of author L. Frank Baum, among many others. The absorbing film argues that 'The Wizard of Oz' is "an integral part of American culture," and chronicles the property's evolution from book to various film treatments and beyond. We learn about the clever wordplay that distinguishes the lyrics of E.Y. Harburg; the casting of Garland over box office princess Shirley Temple; how W.C. Fields was originally envisioned for the role of the wizard; original Tin Man Buddy Ebsen's life-threatening reaction to the aluminum dust in his silver make-up; an on-set accident that severely burned Wicked Witch of the West Margaret Hamilton; the firing of original director Richard Thorpe; and the secret behind the transition from sepia to Technicolor when Dorothy opens the door to Oz. Segments on Toto, the Munchkins, Adrian's costumes, special visual and audio effects, the Technicolor cinematography, the film's premiere, and the impact of TV on 'Oz' are also included, and several myths that have swirled about 'Oz' for decades are debunked. This entertaining and insightful documentary is a great addition to the disc, and essential viewing for anyone even casually interested in this legendary film.

    • "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Storybook" (SD, 10 minutes) – If your kids need a bedtime tale or crave a quick 'Oz' fix, park them in front of the set and let Angela Lansbury read them this charmingly illustrated video storybook.

    • Featurette: "We Haven't Really Met Properly…" (SD, 21 minutes) – Lansbury returns to narrate nine well-produced mini profiles of 'Oz' cast members that include clips from other films in which the actors appeared, as well as a few fun facts. Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, Charley Grapewin, Clara Blandick, and even Toto get tributes, but strangely Judy Garland is absent from the lineup. While it would be impossible to encapsulate and honor Garland's illustrious film, television, and concert career in the allotted two-minute timeslot, younger viewers unfamiliar with this powerhouse performer deserve to know that Dorothy constitutes only a portion of Garland's vast contributions to the entertainment world.

    • Audio Jukebox (70 minutes) – Alternate takes and false starts of 'Over the Rainbow' are included here (at one point Garland experiments with a faster tempo), as well as various rehearsal recordings, voice tests, deleted songs, and underscoring. Great stuff!

    • "Leo Is On the Air" Radio Promo (12 minutes) – This installment of MGM's weekly promotional radio program focuses on 'The Wizard of Oz' and includes excerpts from the film's score, as well as a hefty dose of studio hype.

    • "Good News of 1939" Radio Show (61 minutes) – Actor Robert Young hosts this hour-long 'Oz' tribute in advance of the film's gala release. Garland, Bolger, and Lahr appear on the MGM-sponsored program, along with composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E.Y Harburg. In addition to the 'Oz' content (which includes a performance of 'Over the Rainbow' by Garland), there's also a Baby Snooks sketch starring comedienne Fanny Brice.

    • 12/25/50 Lux Radio Theater Broadcast (61 minutes) – It took awhile for a radio adaptation of 'Oz' to hit the airwaves, but following Garland's dismissal from MGM in 1950, the 28-year-old actress found time to recreate the role of Dorothy for this Christmas Day broadcast. Although she had clearly outgrown the role, Garland nevertheless brings her trademark sincerity, passion, and boundless talent to this abbreviated audio version of the film.

    • Sing-Along – Lyrics pop up whenever a song begins in this option for karaoke lovers. Garland wannabes can also select individual songs from a menu list for quicker access.

    • Stills Galleries (HD) – A whopping 18 galleries include a multitude of photos, promotional material, sketches, and storyboards relating to a wide range of topics from before the project's inception all the way through production, the film's premiere, and various revivals.

    • Theatrical Trailers (SD and HD, 13 minutes) – One teaser and six trailers span 75 years, from 1938 to 2013. The latest preview is especially impressive, as it makes 'Oz' almost seem like a contemporary release.

The original film was revived and renewed frame by frame over 18 months to make it into 3D.
3D reconstruction and reproduction are used to make older films into 3D.
It involves model creation, EXTRACTION FROM THE ORIGINAL FILM, image surfaces as textures for 3D objects, and finally, rendering the 3D scene from two "virtual" to acquire two separate videos merged together.

Standard subtitles assume the viewer hears the audio. SDH is written in a format that understands that the viewer may not be able to hear the audio so it adds information about background sounds and who is speaking along with a translation of the script.

Synopsis:

When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) that needs a brain, a Tin Man (Jack Haley) missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) to earn his help.

ROGER EBERT Movie Review:

                                          "Think again, my pretty."

When I heard that there would be a chance this month to see one of my cherished childhood movies on the big screen for the first time—uncut, remastered, in three-strip Technicolor and IMAX 3-D—it felt like Christmas, Halloween and my birthday were happening all at once. That I could revisit Dorothy and her friends as they take their event-filled journey to the Emerald City while defeating the Wicked Witch of the West with all the modern-day hocus pocus that movies can summon seemed like a gift indeed.

You see, long ago in the days before cable, VHS tapes and DVD's, we Boomer brats had to wait until the network overlords deigned to air "Oz" but once a year from 1959 to 1991, with ad breaks included. Back then, most families couldn't afford a color TV, which meant that only a few privileged youngsters understood the joke about the horse of a different color. For us, the beast was merely different shades of gray.

We might as well have been forced to trudge 20 miles to school in the snow and without shoes, such was our deprived existence.

But now we can make up for lost time and drag the kids and grandkids along—and maybe even borrow some neighbor children, too. Why should they be allowed to grow up never knowing how it feels like to be freaked out by flying monkeys? For one week only starting today, moviegoers of all ages—whether return visitors or first-timers to the Merry Old Land of Oz—will be able to gaze anew upon one of Hollywood's most enduring creations, one that has grown into a kind of shared cultural language that connects generation after generation.

Yes, it is bigger, given the format. And, yes, it is more immersive with the extra dimension (post-converted, of course). But what you might not expect is that even though you can practically recite almost every line by heart (my favorite: "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain"), spiffing up the 1939 musical fantasy with 21st century wizardry has turned it into an experience reborn.

When the cyclone spins its ominous clouds of dirt and dust while a wind-battered Dorothy desperately tries to find shelter on the farm, this version makes it feel as if she is genuinely at risk. As an impatient child, I used to consider the sepia-toned Kansas prologue to be simply filler (save for Judy Garland's plaintive and gloriously unadorned rendition of Over the Rainbow, as moving as ever) until the Munchkins showed up. Not with this viewing. The somewhat crude effect (a large piece of muslin attached to a metal frame) feels more genuinely frightening in three dimensions than all that digital apocalyptic doom, gloom and boom that plagued most of the action movies this past summer. No wonder the more intense 3-D version of Oz has been upgraded to a PG rating from a G.

Rating:
Age Appropriate For: 7+. Yes, it's the same “The Wizard of Oz” you remember, but the Motion Picture Association of America has changed the original G rating to a PG rating.
As a safety precaution, children under six years of age should have limited exposure to 3D films, video games and televisions. The American Optometric Association says that moderation of children's exposure to 3D viewing is just as important as limiting their exposure to 2D and other technical devices.
