Glaswegian chemist Charles Macintosh (the k was a later addition) invented the process of rubberising (thus waterproofing) cotton in 1823. This cloth was prized by tailors who made it into 100 per cent waterproof coats. The Mackintosh company - founded in 1895 - specialised in the manufacture of such rubberised cotton raincoats and has survived to the present day.
