Kabylia (Kabyle: Tamurt n Leqbayel, Tifinagh: ⵜⴰⵎⵓⵔⵜ ⵏ ⵍⴻⵇⴱⴰⵢⴻⵍ, Arabic: بلاد لقبايل) is a historical and geographical region located in the north of modern Algeria. Includes part of the Atlas Mountains with access to the Mediterranean coast. The history of Kabylia contains many episodes of successful resistance to waves of invaders, as well as being the capital of several dynasties. Here, the movement for the recognition of Berber identity (Berber amazigh) gained strength, both in Algeria and in other countries of North Africa. MAK-Anavad, the main political body representing the interests of Kabylia. The Kabyles themselves reject the position of the Algerian government that this region belongs to Algeria, since in 1857 there was a unilateral annexation of the territory of Kabyle. The Kabyle people have suffered from constant political repression and attempts to reduce or even suppress their cultural identity since the start of their two-year war for independence in 1963. Moreover, the Algerian government denies the Kabyles any political existence and, despite numerous peaceful resistances and protests, does not allow MAK-Anavad to call formal elections. Two Kabyle national congresses were held in 2011 and 2014, where all political ideologies were represented. This was the prelude to the creation of the Kabyle Parliament ("Consultative Council"). The new parliament will develop an interim constitution for the future Kabyle state. Currently, Algeria and Kabylia do not recognize each other: Kabylia considers itself colonized, and Algeria, in turn, does not recognize the independence of the region. A segment of the population wishes to exercise their right to self-determination while continuing to fight the Algerian government's attempt to "Arabize" its children through education, media and administration. Over the last decade, MAK-Anavad has been trying to organize peaceful resistance and lead the Kabyle people towards increasing de facto independence.
