From the Preface: “In the Spring of 2000, Washington University Libraries first heard the
tantalizing news of a “Triple Crown” collection being offered for sale. We knew even from a brief description that
this collection—assembled by California
collector Charles Gould over a period of 68 years—would wonderfully complement
our already strong holdings in the areas of fine printing and printing
history. It would also provide the very
best in the way of subject matter and models for the program we run in
collaboration with the School
of Art: the Nancy Spirtas
Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book.
A deal was struck, and in just a matter of months, we were the proud
owners and caretakers of the Triple Crown Collection. A few comments on our use of the name Triple
Crown. We believe the term was used
first by Decherd Turner to refer to the Bridwell Library’s vellum copies of the
Kelmscott Chaucer, the Doves Bible, and the Ashendene Dante; indeed, Triple
Crown aptly describes these three magnificent books. The coinage as used here is applied more
broadly, to encompass the output of these legendary presses.”
