The first half century of Madison University (1819-1869) or the jubilee volume, containing sketches of eleven hundred living and deceased alumni; with fifteen portraits of founders, presidents, and patrons . 1872  Also, the exercises of the semi-centennial anniversary; the historical address; Richards' and Taylors' poems; the missionary record; the war record; lists of collegiate and theological graduates ... and other historical matter....

VERY RARE book on the first 50 years of Madison University, which is now Colgate University, in Hamilton New York, Madison County. A total of 16 steel engravings, 15 of people.

The first steel engraving is of East Hall, West Hall and Alumni Hall, a fantastic 150 year old steel engraving that measures 8.75" x 5.75". (PHOTO 1)

First and only edition with fading to the lower 1/2 of the spine and wrapping around the front and rear board for a couple of inches (PHOTO 3, 5 & 12). The exterior boards obviously got damp once.  Bottom edges of the brown end papers suggest that the moisture stuck around a bit, though the evidence is minor (PHOTO 10 & 11). The bottom half of the spine cover appears to have gotten wet while the rest of the spine has what appears to be standard fading.

There is no staining inside or evidence of direct moisture contact  after the brown end papers, but there is very light foxing to the bottom edges of several of the engravings, though not all (the engravings are on a different paper- PHOTO 6 & 7 show the minor foxing). There is actually an engraving of a woman in there (PHOTO 9), as well as William Colgate (PHOTO 4) and several others. (The protective tissue for the William Colgate steel engraving was mis-cut and folded at the time of production as any attempt to unfold results in the tissue extending beyond the edge of the book)

The remainder of the images are of important founders (Colgate- photo 4) and other Presidents and such. This book was printed for the Jubilee of 1869 with 503 pages and very few copies exist. There are no others for sale. I think Colgate has cornered the market on owning the book as they appear to have at least six copies. Funny thing, is that I went to Colgate and had no idea that Madison University was the same until I recognized the frontispiece.

PLEASE NOTE: For book sales, I virtually always include a vinyl bag tightly wrapped on the exterior. This is an attempt to prevent any USPS employee from opening the package for inspection as it would be time consuming for them to repackage it. This is done simply because my packaging is done more carefully than their repackaging and also to protect the book from the elements. The vinyl bag covers cardboard protection and you can simply cut the  bag open (carefully) and remove the contents. The cardboard protection is also typically held with tape and cutting in the obvious places will allow the cardboard to pop right open, exposing the book (in another protective vinyl bag). Using this method, you should be able to open any book I send in under a minute. No "buzz saw" is required.  Thank you
