Herzog managed the Kansas City
Royals teams that appeared in three consecutive playoff
appearances from 1976 to 1978. In
1980, he was hired by the St. Louis Cardinals. In the 1980's, the Cardinals made three World Series appearances,
winning the 1982 World Series over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Herzog's style of play was nicknamed "Whiteyball"
and concentrated on pitching, speed, and defense. Herzog's lineups would
deploy base-stealing threats at the top of the lineup, a power hitter (such as
George Brett, Pedro Guerrero or Jack Clark) hitting in the middle of the order,
with more base stealers toward the end of the lineup. This allowed his teams to
win consistently in large artificial turf stadiums. Herzog also preferred patient hitters with
high on-base percentages.
Herzog led teams to six division titles,
three pennant winners, and one World Series winner. Overall, Herzog managed teams won 1281 games and overall he had a .532 winning percentage. During his years with the Cardinals, the
teams appeared in 37 post season games, winning 21 of them for a .568 winning percentage.
Herzog was inducted into the Baseball
Hall of Fame in 2010, and was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall
of Fame Museum in 2014.
