PONTECHIUM MACULATUM, VIPER'S BUGLOSS, ECHIUM

This fantastic plant was previously known as Echium russicum and Echium rubrum. After thorough genetic research, the plant was separated into a new genus, Pontechium. This is a bristly, upright, short lived perennial, that produces a single or several flower-bearing stems. It usually reaches a hight 40- 70 cm. Lanceolate to narrowly elliptical leaves are to 10 cm long. Dark red flowering panicles over 30 cm long, looks like thick pipe cleaners. A low maintenance plant so vigorous in growth it makes a quick gap filler. Pontechium maculatum looks lovely as a stand alone specimen. Suitable for growing in containers and an unusual cut flower. Viper's bugloss looks good in any mixed border. Easy from seeds. Flowers in second year from sowing.
