We are offering a 1870s RARE HAND-PAINTED CDV photographs of a member of the Italian Confraternito dei Sacconi (which is written in ink on the back).  The man is dressed in the traditional costume of the brotherhood.  The photo is by Fratoddi, Via Felice No. 103, Roma.  The Confraternito dei Sacconi, a Catholic Church brotherhood, was established in 1760 and its purpose was to redeem the souls suffering in Purgatory and to bury the bodies of the unknown and unwanted.  The bodies were buried in the Sacconi Rossi Crypt which was built in 1784 on Tiber Island, Italy, and to this day the crypt is open to the public for only one hour a year on All Souls Day, November 2.

Cardinal Antonelli (1806-1876) - was Cardinal Secretary of State of the Papal States from 1848 until his death, presiding over the drafting of the constitution of the Paper States.  He played a key role in Italian politics, resisting the unification of Italy, and affecting Roman Catholic interests in European affairs. In 1848, when the Papal States were overthrown by liberals and replaced by a Roman Republic, Cardinal Antonelli arranged the flight of Pope Pius IX to Gaeta.  The Papal States were restored to the pope in 1849 by French and Austrian arms, called in an Antonelli's request.ter Pope Pius IX authorized new burials in the crypt.

 Roman Carrettiere (which is written in ink on the back).  Photo is by Fratoddi, Via Felice No. 108, Roma.  A carrettiere was a driver of a horse-drawn carriage or wagon.  The man is dressed in traditional clothing - a pointed hat with a feather, short pants with a scarf around his waist, vest, and cape.
