Description - Rosewood box, probably a stationary box, made in the United Kingdom during the Georgian period in about 1830, & includes inlaid brass floral decoration, typical of this period (photographs 1 to 13).

The rectangular brass box is predominantly made from Rosewood & consist of a lid & container (photographs 1 to 13). The top & front exterior surfaces of the rectangular lid display inlaid brass floral decoration around their edges (photographs 1 to 4). The centre of the lid's exterior top surface also has a folding brass carrying handle, which rotates by approximately 90 degrees from a closed horizontal position to a open vertical position (photographs 2 to 4). The front exterior surface of the container also has inlaid brass floral decoration around its edges, & a brass key hole (key not included) situated slightly above centre (photographs 1 to 3). The majority of the box's flat rectangular base is covered with a light green hessian like material, which protects any surfaces the box may be placed on from scratching (photograph 8).

The lid opens via rotation by approximately 90 degrees due to a pair of brass hinges situated along the top back edge of the container (photographs 7 & 9). The lid's hollow interior has part of the metal lock situated centrally near its front edge, & is predominantly covered by the rectangular front board of the folding pocket (photographs 9 & 10). The front board is covered in the red material & decorated around its edges by a gold & red coloured pattern, & by a gold coloured circular pattern in the centre (photograph 10). The front board has a rotating metal clip situated centraly near the top, & a square pull material underneath, which allows the front board to be opened via rotation by approximately 90 degrees (photographs 9, 10, & 12). The red folding section of the pocket is attached to the back surface of the front board, & opens to enable objects to be placed in it (book not included) (photographs 12 & 13). The back surface of the lid's hollow interior is rectangular, covered in the red material, has a frame shape around its edges, & a rotating metal clip situated centrally on either side of the frame (photograph 12). Items such as a picture, paper, or a thin book could possibly have been held by the rotating metal clips within the frame (photograph 12). The interior of the hollow rectangular container consists of a pair of rectangular compartments for holding objects, probably stationary (photographs 9 & 11). Both compartments are covered in the red material, with the main large compartment situated at the front, & the thin small compartment situated at the back (photographs 9 & 11). The majority of the lock is also situated centrally near the top front edge of the container (photographs 11 to 13).

Condition - The brass & metal surfaces of the floral decoration, the carrying handle, the key hole & lock, the hinges, & the rotating metal clips include marks & scratches, & have tarnished over time (photographs 1 to 4, 7, & 9 to 13). The box's exterior & interior wooden surfaces include chips, thin cracks, marks, scratches, & areas of discolouration (photographs 1 to 13). A thin piece of inlaid brass or wood is absent from underneath the brass base of the folding carrying handle (photographs 3 & 4). The light green hessian like material covering the box's flat rectangular base includes numerous areas of wear (photograph 8). The red material covering some of the box's interior surfaces has been restored (photographs 11 & 12). The other interior surfaces covered by the red material include discolouration marks & some areas of wear (photographs 9 to 13). The gold coloured decorative pattern on the front surface of the rectangular front board of the pocket has some areas of discolouration (photographs 9 & 10). However, the box functions (minus key), & is general in good condition considering its age & previous use (photographs 1 to 13).

Dimensions - The length of the closed box is 27.8 cm, the width 21.6 cm, the depth (carrying handle down) 11.9 cm, & the weight 1.509 kg (photographs ).
