I can't tell you how old this fellow is, but I can tell you that he is older than seventy.  This was a fixture of my childhood, and I know it belonged to my mother prior to my birth (I'm 68).   Elephant has aged well, with the exception of his paint--looks to have been silvery grey, which is now quite patchy.  The rust is superficial and could easily be cleaned up without any damage to him, but I have left him "as is" for his original integrity.  The bolt holding the screw probably could use some WD40, but overall I'd say he's aging better than I am.  A close up is included to show the detail of his head, eyes, etc.

The slot on top if for coins (of course!) and he comes apart via the screw and bolt.  Despite his small size and hollow insides, he weighs almost exactly one pound.

I'm happy to provide additional photos and/or answer any questions you may have.
