Pattern 1861 US Army "McDowell" Forage Cap - Civil War Forage Cap - Size Large

Hat Size Large: 7-1/4 to 7-3/8

The Pattern 1861 US Army Cap, otherwise known as the "McDowell Cap" or "Forage Cap" was a popular style borrowed from the French and Austrians. It featured the same high, fold-over crown common to all forage caps of the period, but was outfitted with a narrow crescent shaped brim. The name "McDowell Cap" originated with US General Irwin McDowell who helped popularize the style. Contractors for the US Army produced hundreds of thousands during the Civil War. Additionally, many more were manufactured and available as private purchase items. They were worn by enlisted men and officers alike.

Our Pattern 1861 US Army "McDowell" Forage Cap is true to form, featuring period materials including fine wool body, full cotton lining, and leather sweatband, chin-strap, and brim. Our reproduction features a patent leather brim and chin-strap just like those found on over 800,000 caps produced by army contractors during the war.
