Codefendants was born out of Get Dead vocalist Sam King's graffiti crew offering tattoos and making flash art to raise money to help Ceschi Ramos whilst the rapper was incarcerated. They would eventually meet at the Gilman Street Project in Berkeley, California, and bond over a bottle of Jameson and a shared love of all things hip-hop and punk oriented. Add Fat Mike of NOFX to the mix, and you have Codefendants. The title of their debut album This Is Crime Wave comes from their self-classified genre of 'Crime Wave', but to be more specific, imagine elements of hip-hop, new wave, flamenco, and a hearty dose of the Beatles, conjured by a trio of punks and MCs.
