The term "Kenjo" refers to the practice established since the year Keicho 5 (1600), when Kuroda Nagamasa came to rule over Chikuzen. As part of this tradition, a selection of Hakata textiles, specifically ten strips of obi fabric and three pieces of raw silk, is presented to the Edo Shogunate every March. The pattern of these offerings was characterized by a fixed design combining the motifs of the Buddhist implements "Dokko" and "Kasara" with stripes in the middle. Formerly known simply as the "Dokko" and "Kasara Ukewake-gara," it has since come to be referred to as "Kenjo."
