One packet of more than 50 seeds.
Raising hybrid Streptocarpus (Cape Primrose) from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant lovers.
This
is our 2023-24 offering of seeds from seedlings out of the named
hybrid Streptocarpus cultivar 'Kika' (second picture). In other words 'Kika' is
the grandparent, twice, of plants you will raise from these seeds. The other photos are some of the
seedlings raised from its seed. Seed parents are white, light pink,
and dark pink, all with some yellow in the centre (first photos and 3rd - 6th
photos, for example). Pollen parents are Sylvian bicolors, like
'Kika,' in combinations of red, white, mauve, and pink, with some
yellow on the lower petal lobes (7th - 16th photos, for
example). The final photo is a test of a sample packet, photographed
after 25 days.
'Kika' is a Sylvian hybrid. These are
typically infertile and cannot produce seeds. However, two years ago,
one 'Kika' plant produced two small pods containing a few seeds. We
grew several seedlings. Many of them were also Sylvian (first photo),
with pollen but no good stigma to receive pollen. A few plants had
regular, fertile flowers. We cross-pollinated them, using pollen from
the infertile Sylvians and from 'Kika.' The results are a mix of
Sylvians and regular flowers, in pinks and reds, white, yellow, and
mauve, with various markings and petal forms.
The last
photo shows some seeds we have started. The photo is taken after 25
days. By this time, almost all seeds have germinated and some are
ready to transplant in potting mix.
Seeds can be shipped
safely at any time of year. We have tested seeds after storing them
outdoors in colder than -20C weather, and they germinated just fine.
Detailed instructions are included. Flowering plants can
be produced 5-7 months after sowing.
Plants can be grown
indoors in indirect natural light, or in artificial light
supplemented with indirect natural light. Plants can also be grown
outdoors in shade, in frost-free weather.
Seeds are tiny.
Handle carefully. Packets contain at least the stated number, often
several more.
Seeds are tested. Given proper conditions,
at least 80% will germinate. Typically, germination is visible in the
earliest seeds after around 10 days; more seeds will germinate over
the next 15 days or so.
Shipping is via standard
letter-mail. Standard letter-mail does not include tracking service.
If you want a tracking number, please send us a message and we will
give you a price.
Some countries regulate or restrict
imports of plant materials, which may include seeds. Please check
before you buy. We expect buyers to bear any risks and costs
associated with their country's policies and regulations.
