Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in the 13th century. He is
considered one of the most important Italian poets. He greatly
contributed to the development of the Italian language, linguistics, and
political philosophy. His masterpiece, the Divine Comedy, is
one of the greatest works of world literature. It describes Dante’s
travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven as a chastisement for his
sins. Dante’s ideal woman Beatrice, whom he loved before she died,
helped him go through his ordeal by sending the Roman poet Virgil to
guide him through Hell and Purgatory before joining her in Heaven. On
his way, Dante met many historical and contemporary great persons.
Dante’s name is mentioned only once in the Divine Comedy, at the time when Virgil has to leave him because as a pagan he cannot enter Heaven..
