STACHYS COCCINEA “POW WOW”, SCARLET BETONY

This is only species in genus Stachys with red flowers. This charming herbaceous perennial is rarely seen in gardens. Native to south western US and north Mexico. It has green leaves to 7 cm long, with serrated margins and unusual fragrance (one of common names of this plant is “Seven-Up plant”). Densely packed tubular flowers forms numerous, erect inflorescences. The “Pow Wow” variety is compact, to 30 cm tall, well branched and produces very showy, brick-red flowers to 3 cm long. Amazingly long flowering period lasts from spring into frosts. In colder climates is usually grown as an annual. Ideal choice for front of border, as a groundcover or for rocky garden. Great pot and container plant. It blooms reliably in the first year after sowing.
