Artist Biography: Tom Dodson, a revered artist born in Salford in 1910, was famed for his evocative portrayals of everyday life, his creations brimming with nostalgia and fine details of a bygone era. Born into a working-class family, Dodson was the eldest of five children. Despite his early artistic inclinations - being the top of the class in drawing and often sketching local characters on pavements - he had to surrender his pencils and paints at the tender age of 14 to enter the grocery trade due to the financial constraints of the time.

Dodson worked in various industries and ended his professional career as a school caretaker. It was only after his retirement that he found the time and space to return to his long-forgotten passion. His natural talent blossomed as his quick sketches evolved into serious works that soon found themselves in high demand.

Known affectionately as 'Lancashire's favourite artist', Dodson had a unique ability to vividly recall and depict scenes from his childhood and mid-20th-century life. His subjects, ranging from classrooms, gas-lit corner shops, fairgrounds to Lancashire slop stones, were painted with remarkable authenticity, simplicity, and vivacity. Dodson's art, free from any pretence or affectation, truly differentiated him from his contemporaries.

His inaugural exhibition saw all his works bought within hours, marking his successful entry into the art world with widespread praise from critics. His popularity and reputation only grew from there, as did the demand for his nostalgic and beautifully composed paintings. Dodson's works were more than just paintings; they were windows into past lives, capturing the simplicity and energy of ordinary moments, and they cemented a place in the hearts of his admirers.

Though he had no formal training as an artist, his distinctive style and the emotional resonance of his works made him a respected figure in the art world. For those who had the chance to meet him, they found a humble and generous man behind the artist, further enhancing the love and appreciation for his work. Dodson passed away in 1991, leaving behind a timeless legacy of evocative and nostalgic art that continues to captivate audiences and critics alike.

All our listings include a condition report, multiple photographs, and a link to higher resolution photographs in a gallery album hosted by Google. eBay greatly reduces the quality of the images displayed, so for the higher quality images follow the link in the description to the gallery album.
  • Authenticity When we list an artwork as being "by" a particular artist, without a doubt we guarantee it to be an original artwork by the artist as stated. When we sell artwork described as an "oil painting", "watercolour" or a "print", this is quite simply what it really is. When we list artwork as by a "follower" or "school" or "manner" of an artist, or from a specific period or time eg. "19th century". Based on the available information, knowledge and research, that is what we believe the artwork to be. If we are not sure about the artist, medium, or age, we will clearly say so and tell you why.

Where needed to further our knowledge, artwork will be independently verified to be certain it is as described before being offered. Quite simply we have one rule, we do not sell recent fakes or forgeries. If any artwork could not be sold through a reputable Auction House, then we will not act fraudulently or underhandedly by offering it for sale here through Art2Own. If after a purchase you find there is doubt about our description of your artwork, we will offer a full no quibble refund.

This can take several weeks and in this instance, we can only authorise the return and pay a refund to you when the Courier investigation has completed.
  • Distance Selling Regulations Most Buy It Now purchases in the UK are covered under the Distance Selling Regulations, which give consumer buyers the right to cancel the purchase within fourteen working days after the day they receive the item.
