The Central Figure of Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock forever changed how painting was understood in the 20th century. Pollock and his contemporaries rejected a figural representation, seeking to develop a new visual language to articulate their inner thoughts, emotions, and impulses.

In 1947, Pollock made his first "drip" paintings. These energetic compositions garnered attention for being "all-over", or painted with little regard for depth-of-field or the boundary implied by the edge of the canvas.

Pollock created GALAXY, along with three other paintings that reference the night sky, by placing the canvas on the floor rather than on easel. He then obscured an existing image with colorful skeins of paint that he poured, flung, and brushed across the surface. The spontaneous and physical approach to making art inspired critic Harold Rosenberg to corn the term "action painting".
