Marilyn Monroe - 'Marilyn', Life Magazine Cover, California, 1959

An exquisite silver gelatin print on Baryta paper, published in 1981, from photographer Philippe Halsman’s Life Magazine cover shoot with Marilyn in 1959. This limited edition is numbered 37 (handwritten) / 250, features the artist’s copyright stamp verso and has been preserved in very good condition.

Philippe Halsman first studied electrical engineering in Dresden, Germany, before moving to Paris at the age of 25. There he studied at the Sorbonne and devoted his life to the photographic arts.

 He became famous as a portrait and fashion photographer and was one of the lead photographers for Life Magazine for several decades. in 1945, he was elected President of the American Society of Magazine Photographers by his peers. His smile-inducing ‘Jump’ series featuring celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon and Salvador Dali received international recognition.
