The Queen of the Night relief, also known as the Burney relief, is an ancient Mesopotamian terracotta plaque dating back to the Old-Babylonian period (1800-1750 BC). The high relief artwork portrays a winged and nude Ishtar (Mesopotamian)/Inanna (Sumerian) with birdโ€™s talons, suggesting her ability to fly. The Goddess of the Night is depicted flanked by two owls and perched upon two supine lions. Ishtar symbolizes love, encompassing human-animal connections, along with its power and dangers. As the daughter of Anu, she was venerated in various Middle Eastern cities, including Nineveh, Ashur, Arbela, and her sacred center, Uruk. The relief provides a glimpse into the religious and cultural significance of Ishtar in the ancient Mesopotamian world.
