When Adidas debuted the superstar in 1969, it was with on-court performance in mind. It wasn't until the shoe's popularity spread to about three-fourths of the pro and college ranks over the next few years that its also began to appear on the streets.
The Superstar featured a full leather upper for a durable and classic look, a thick padded tongue for comfort and support, and increased padding around the heel for a little extra comfort.
This upper helped the Superstar earn its "Shell toe" nickname, as an extra layer over the toe cap provided additional support and protection. This was extremely functional for basketball and became a popular constant on all models of the Superstar that followed.
The shoe began life as a low-cut take down of the Pro Model basketball sneaker. But its popularity - already on the rise -skyrocketed once fans of hip-hop saw Run-DMC in the early 80's, laces out and tongues popped, when they performed their song "My Adidas" in 1986.
