Coach Billy Tubbs Oklahoma Sooners Basketball Comic Strip Gift Plaque

This is a 6" x 8" wood plaque that belonged to NCAA basketball coaching legend Billy Tubbs.  The comical plaque appears to have been a gift from a friend or colleague.

The plaque says "TO BILLY" at the top, has a copy of a Shoe comic strip with a basketball coaching subject matter, and says "REMEMBERING 1981-82 JAN & C.W.".

Item was obtained at the Tubbs estate sale held in May, 2023 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Billy Tubbs grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and attended Tulsa Central High School.  He played college basketball at Lon Morris Junior College and Lamar.  His coaching career also began at Lamar, where he served as an assistant from 1960 to 1971.  His first head coaching job was at Southwestern (TX), and would later serve as head coach at his alma mater from 1976 to 1980.  He then coached the Oklahoma Sooners from 1980 to 1994, and was known for his high scorning run and gun offense and full court press defense.  His Sooners would make it to the NCAA title game in 1988.  He would coach such Sooner greats as Wayman Tisdale, Tim McAlister, Harvey Grant, Stacey King, Mookie Blaylock, and Brent Price.  Tubbs then coached TCU from 1994 to 2002, and made yet another return to Lamar serving as both athletic director and basketball coach before retiring.

Note: plaque has some minor surface scratches or imperfections.
