he Dancing House building in Prague

The Dancing House, also known as Ginger and Fred is a building completed in 1996 under the initial official name Nationale-Nederlanden Building. Located on The Rašín Embankment on the right bank of the Vltava river, the house was named after the shape of its two corner towers, inspired by the famous dance couple Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers of the interwar period. The structure was erected on a slab made of reinforced concrete and supported by a system of drilled pillars, with 99 original panels attached to the facade of the structure. The two front towers imitate a couple of dancers. One of them, called Fred, is crowned with a structure of pipes covered in stainless steel mesh styled as the head of Medusa. The house has nine floors with asymmetrical rooms and slanted walls. The facade of the house steps out from the line of the street houses into the pavement. The building triggered a wide-ranging public debate on architecture in Prague. Its supporters praised it as a work of modern architecture missing in Prague. The opponents argued that the building does not match the historical Prague and interferes with the city skyline. The Dancing House is now perceived as Prague’s first post-revolutionary building designed by world’s best architects. It is described as one of Prague’s symbols and a tourist magnet.
