Jezeří Chateau is one of the most interesting Czech sights. Originally a medieval castle de Lacu, also known as Eisenberg, has been looking down from the top of the Ore Mountains since 1365. In 1549, it was converted into a Renaissance chateau. After the Battle of White Mountain, the chateau was confiscated, and from 1623 it belonged to the Lobkowicz family. When a fire destroyed it in 1649, it was redesigned in the High Baroque style as an H-shaped building. The rebuilt chateau became an important cultural and social centre visited by the most famous persons in contemporary culture, such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe or Ludwig van Beethoven, who premiered his Eroica Symphony at Jezeří. During World War II, an SS guard unit was stationed at the chateau, guarding captured senior officers of the Allied armies. After the war, it was nationalised and used by the Czechoslovak army. It became even more endangered in the mid-1980s because of its location on the edge of the brown coal basin. Coal mining being prioritised, the chateau was destined for demolition. Fortunately, this did not happen and a rebuilding project was started in 1988. The present Jezeří Chateau is a first-class landmark, exceptional not only for its extraordinary artistic and architectural value but also for its troubled fate and extremely beautiful location.
