Clifford Alan Perkins was only hineteen years old when he left his native Wisconsin in 1908 to move to El Paso where he became a postoffice employee. On January 1911, he joined the U.S. Immigration Service at Tucson; later he was transferred to Douglas, Arizona and in 1913 to El Paso where he was selected to head the Immigration Border Patrol when it was formed in 1924. In 1926, he was transferred to San Antonio to head the Patrol in that district.

Finally, in 1930 he went to San Ysidro, California as Officer in Charge of the port of entry, a position he held until his retirement in 1953. He resided in Chula Vista, California at his death in 1977.

The author was ably assisted by Nancy Dickey in writing his memoirs and by Dr. C. L. Sonnichsen, who edited the manuscript and provided the introduction.
