4. I Love Paris (2000)

All 4 include

  • Color photo
  • Master chart
  • Thread legend
  • Directions

As always Lauren Sauer's designs are unique and beautiful but her photos do not do justice to her imaginative use of stitches in her designs.

1. 'Old Brick' Miniature Sampler (1996)
Traditional sampler with house flanked by trees in the center, upper case alphabet above, numbers 1-13 below, and simple border.
Thread legend for 13 shades of The Gentle Art Sampler threads.
Stitch count 82h x 60w. Finished size on 30 or 32 count linen 4" x 5-1/4".
According to the directions, you may stitch this entirely in cross stitches or use cross, Lauren's brick stitch (her own version), Smyrna cross (reversed), satin (vertical and horizontal), fan eyelet, stem, queen variation, pulled eyelets, Rhodes variation, and backstitching.

2. Paisley Elegance (1994)
This design is so early it has Lauren Guarnieri on it instead of Lauren Sauer.
Two mirrored flower paisleys with beaded background finished as an elegant beaded clutch evening bag/purse.
Thread legend for DMC floss, Balger (Kreinik) fine metallic thread, seed, tear-drop, bugle, and petite beads.
Finishing instructions for the purse are included with diagrams.
Stitch count 55h x 107w. Finished size on 28 count Jobelan 4" x 7-3/4".
Stitches include cross, stem, satin, woven long, and backstitching with bead embellishment attachment.

From the pattern - "patterned woolen shawls woven in the textile mills of Paisley, Scotland...inspiration for this small beaded clutch evening bag...

3. A Posy for Dot (1999)
Very simple flower stitched with buttons and The Gentle Arts Sampler Threads. There is a simple cross-stitched (or alternatively Smyrna cross stitches or Palestrina knots) border.
Two alternative stitching patterns, one uses buttons for the leaves as well as the flower, the other stitches the leaves and suggests using French knots or seed beads for the flower. Grass is buttonholed (or alternatively long stitches with backstitching). Stem is stem stitches or alternatively whipped backstitches. Optional ladybug button in the grass.
Finished as framed piece.
Thread count 47 x 61. Finished design size on 28 count linen is 3-1/4" x 4-1/4".

From the pattern - "works up quickly...use up small pieces of fabric, short lengths of thread, and interesting buttons".

4. I Love Paris (2000)
Center motif of sailing ship on the seas with red background and blue band with fleurs de lis across the top. Paris is stitched on the sides with a gold border with room for initials.
Thread count 81 x 81. Finished design size on 28 count linen is 5" x 5".
Mostly cross-stitched with some stem stitches, regular and wrapped, long stitches, lazy daisy stitches, and backstitching.
Two alternative versions are described. One uses Au Ver A Soie, Soie d'Alger, and Accentuate and the other uses The Gentle Arts Sampler Threads.

From the pattern "...inspired by a tiny enamed plaque on a bracelet that was given to my Mother many, many years ago...She gave it to me, and I, in turn, passed it along to my daughter just before her very first holiday in France, in July of 1999...".
