Luggin Capillary

Properties: Ohmic potential drop exists in the solution between the two electrodes when current passes through the cell, especially in the solution with higher resistivity and larger current. In order to minimize its influence on potential measurement, the glass tube at the solution end of the reference electrode is pulled into a capillary, i.e. Lukin capillary, which is as close as possible to the working electrode, so that almost no current passes through the measuring circuit of the reference electrode, so that more accurate potential data can be measured by a high resistance voltmeter.

Function: The function of Lujin capillary is to eliminate resistance overpotential; three electrodes (to be measured, auxiliary electrodes, reference electrodes), auxiliary electrodes and to be measured electrodes, change the resistance in the circuit, control the current density of the to be measured electrodes, and obtain different overpotential; reference electrodes and to be measured electrodes are determined by cancellation method.

Usage: Lukin capillary tip should be as close as possible to the surface of the research electrode to minimize the ohmic potential drop. But it can not be too close, otherwise it will have a significant shielding effect on the surface of the electrode and affect the current distribution. In order to reduce the ohmic pressure drop of the solution without obvious shielding effect, the tip distance from the surface of the research electrode is not less than the outer diameter of the Rukin capillary.

2. Preparation, use and maintenance

[1] 1. Add 3 grams of agar and 97 ml distilled water to beaker and heat it in water bath until it dissolves completely. Then add 30 grams of KCl and stir thoroughly. After KCl dissolves completely, add the solution into the pre-bent glass tube with dropper or siphon while it is hot. It can be used after agar is set.

2. Agar-saturated KCl salt bridges can not be used in solutions containing Ag+, Hg2+ and Cl-ions or ClO4-and other substances that interact with K+.

3. The salt bridge will be destroyed by the test above 80 C. It is better to control the test temperature below 70 C.

4. After the experiment, salt bridge needs to be washed with deionized water to avoid polluting the electrode, and then immersed in saturated KCl solution. Attention should be paid to supplementing deionized water regularly to prevent dry cracking damage of salt bridges.

5. After the experiment, the saturated calomel electrode should be immersed in the saturated KCl solution to prevent deterioration of the complementary solution of the composite electrode. In future use, it is necessary to check whether the supplementary solution inside the electrode is saturated (usually there will be supersaturated KCl crystals).

6. Note: The beaker for storing saturated calomel electrodes and salt bridges is strictly forbidden to store other articles, and the dropper placed in it should not be used for other purposes.
