Malta, air defences 1943
This map shows the light anti-aircraft defences on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo, which were vital bases for Allied aircraft and ship-ping during the Desert War. Because of its strategic importance, and relative proximity to Axis airfields in Sicily and southern Italy, Malta was subjected to intensive aerial bombardment. These air defences — along with, initially, three Gloster Gladiator biplanes named Faith, Hope and Charity — allowed British forces on the islands to hold out and earn the people of Malta a George Cross for their heroism.
